The Forward Roll

The forward roll is three fingers in one order, repeated: thumb, index, middle. Nothing about it is complicated, and everything about bluegrass banjo depends on it. Played evenly at speed it produces a continuous stream of eighth notes with no obvious accent, and the tune emerges from which strings the left hand has stopped rather than from anything the right hand does differently.

The pattern, step by step

Eight eighth notes, written in banjo string numbers (1 is the highest neck string, 5 is the short drone). The pitches below are computed from the instrument's real open-string tuning with an open G shape under the hand — nothing in this table is typed by hand:

The finger assignment is the standard three-finger rule this site states once and then obeys everywhere: the thumb takes strings 5, 4, 3; the index takes string 2; the middle takes string 1. This roll touches 3 strings (5, 2, 1) and sounds 3 distinct pitches over an open G.

Getting it even

Play it with no left hand at all first — just the open strings — until every one of the eight notes is the same length and the same volume. That is harder than it sounds and it is the entire skill; a roll that is 90% even sounds wrong immediately, because a banjo gives you no sustain to blur the edges. Only once it is even should you put a chord under it.

Then take it through a chord change without letting the right hand pause. The commonest fault in a beginner's playing is not a wrong note — it is a roll that stops while the left hand thinks. Run it against the metronome at a tempo where the change is comfortable, and move up in single clicks.
